Robert Church Park

Robert Church Park is a 7.68-acre park including historic markers, a playground, 4 mini pavilions, a short walking trail, and picnic tables.

Robert Reed Church is considered the first black millionaire. In 1899, Memphis didn’t provide recreational facilities for black citizens, so Church invested in “Church Park,” which contained a playground and a large concert hall where black theatrical groups could perform. Guests such as Booker T. Washington, President Teddy Roosevelt, and W.C. Handy all spoke at the concert hall.

This park has been adopted by Bill Hecht, Nanetta Walls & Neighborhood Friends. If you’d like to volunteer or adopt a park yourself, visit Memphis City Beautiful.

Note:

Park hours of operation are 6:00 a.m. to 8:00 p.m. during the Spring/Summer and 6:00 a.m. to 6:00 p.m. during the Fall/Winter.
